A Journal, a Poem, and a Sermon.

God’s mercy is what is keeping me here right now. It is what has been molding me these past twenty years; and what will continue to mold me until He decides to call me home. But sometimes, it terrifies me. To know that I fall so short and yet, he loves me. I listened to a sermon tonight by Matt Chandler and he said, “What leads us to discipline? It’s love. The love of Christ compels us, it pushes us, it controls us…Why does the love of Christ compel you? Because you’re dead!” And something clicked in me.

This semester, God has been showing me that above all, He is merciful. Everything that He hands me is because of His mercy. Especially the sufferings I go through. If I were to have everything I want exactly how I want it, I would never know how much I need Jesus. My foundation of joy would be built on everything I have and all I have done. But seeing how quickly things and people I love can be taken away or placed out of reach, I know that nothing I have earned is mine to keep. The only thing I can keep is Christ. He loves me. He desires me to know Him deeply, and I’m finding that the more I seek Him, the more I want to find. The more I want to find Him, the more deeply I love him. The more I love Him, the more I want to do what He says. The more I want to do what He says, the more I want to know Him.

Last July I was studying in Jonah and wrote this in my journal:
“Jonah disobeyed God and he knew the only way to make it right was to jump into what God placed in his path. I have been so stressed out and insecure lately, but honestly, I’ve been avoiding God, not trying to grow close to him. I feel like I should be able to control things and that I know better for my life than God does…God help me…Throw me into the sea. Come what may, sink or swim, throw me into the sea. Don’t let me chicken out or try to talk myself out of this. I want to be real. I want with every fiber of my being to be the woman You created me to be – show me how to get there.”
The next day I read Jonah 2:2-9 and I knew that learning was coming. Then at the beginning of fall semester, I wrote a poem begging God to make me love Him, pleading with Him to give me a desire to know Him more deeply than I ever have. My prayer since then has been for Him to break me, for Him to break those around me because I understand that the only way to see how much I need Him is for Him to show me that He is my only joy. He is the only solid foundation; the only one that will not cave in on top of me. I need Him. And He loves me, He loved me before I ever desired to obey Him. He loves me as flawed as I am. And that is the joy of my life: Christ is my foundation and He can be rebuilt upon when lesser joys are taken. Everything else fades when compared with my Treasure; I may rejoice in everything - the obvious joys and the heartaches - because it all leads closer to Him.

All the commands in Scripture are about leading you into joy. He’s not trying to steal from you; how is God glorified by your begrudging submission under the fear of Hell? God’s not glorified in that. God’s glorified in the fact that we enjoy Him, that we love Him, that He gives good gifts to His children…When God speaks into any facet of life, God is trying to lead you into joy; He’s not trying to steal from you, He’s trying to lead you into life. – Paraphrase of Chandler from Pastoral Prayers.

God's been doing so much like this is my life too; breaking me so that I need to turn to Him. Using situations that I CANNOT handle on my own. As much as I tend to try things my own way, I find that once I let God take over, I'm filled with an overwhelming feeling once my prayers are answered HIS way. I still struggle (a lot) with trusting Him with my life...which I don't understand, since He IS the one that created me.

Hey Kiddo,

I find myself saying a lot of late that you are wise beyond your years (don't get a big head though OK?). . .

What an amazing grace cycle that drives/motivates/compels/propels the life of a growing Christian. The more we surrender to Jesus, the more we grow and want to surrender to Jesus and on and on and on and on . . . He is above all merciful and filled with Grace!

Always remember - Hold loosely onto the things of this world and hold tight to Jesus the Author and Perfector of our faith.

I'm blessed to be a part of your journey!

First in Awhile

The past year or so I have been working with the youth group at the church I grew up in. Such an odd thing to wrap my mind around. The group that in so many ways formed who I am today is something I still get to be there for. Though now I'm the responsible one. The mature one. As our interim pastor says, "the one with all the answers." (He JOKES anyway). I show up and help lead where I can. Because it's what is needed. And it's a calling I feel I have on my life. To work with young people, to help teach. The irony is that my journey lately has taken me through a struggle with discipline. Becoming the person I need to be and doing the actions to get me there. I watch my husband and it seems so easy for him while for me often it's a battle of   but I don't want to .  And I have to admit comparisons have only intensified that feeling. It's so easy to sit back and deny what I ought to do in favor of what's right in front of me.  But I

I am Redeemed

You set me free. I don’t have to be, That old man inside of me. I’m not who I used to be. Thank God, I’m redeemed. I’ve loved this song since it was released. The simple truth I so often forget. I am redeemed. It’s basic. Essentially basic. But why can’t I remember? So often I find myself slipping into my version of “that old man.” I listened to a sermon awhile ago and the pastor talked about how everyone goes through times of desert. Then he started talking to me. Just make sure you aren’t keeping yourself in the desert any longer than you have to. Longer than you have to. The phrase played in my mind like tacky wordart. Big, bright letters swirling into sentences. Into meaning. Into my life. I don’t have to be like that. I don’t have to do that or hide there. I am redeemed . Bought back. Made better. Set free. Don’t keep yourself in that desert any longer than you have to be there. There is a special kind of grace in this remembering. I

Tired of Losing...

We’re not really born with a fair shake, you know. We start out this life in teeny tiny little bodies that are completely defenseless then we grow into children who do not understand that cars whizzing by on the street are dangerous. Then onto teenagers fueled by junk food and raw emotion often ill-controlled. The twenty-something’s who think life is in the palm of their hands and their plans are the beautiful, world changing kind. Into our thirties we slow down a little bit, maybe have a family, maybe altered dreams completely, but the beauty is still there if a bit less dim. The forties and fifties, some say they’re the new twenties packed with whole new dreams about this new, wiser portion of life – the kids are growing up and that means more grown up time. Again. The sixties: grandbabies crying and the silver hair let’s opinions be heard with some respect. Seventy, eighty, ninety. The respect seems to dwindle as Let the journey rage on does ability. Dreams change to regr
